Been using my new netbook for a few days already, and it working very well so far.
I don’t understand why so many people saying that 1GB RAM for a netbook is not enough and slow.
But I used until very satisfied. Everything loads very smooth.
Watching youtube and playing facebook games without problems too, all very smooth.
And I enjoy using it with skype, it never lags.
Maybe it is because I am not using Windows and there is no virus and antivirus hogs up my RAM.
The webcam quality is very good too.
The more I use it, the more I like it.
Windows sux. There will be tons of problem now if u use windows.
This is why I use Ubuntu at the 1st place.
I can’t tolerate those virus in Windows.
@Kelvin Windows isn’t bad, it just requires a lot of ram.
Ubuntu is great for ram usage since Windows uses a lot of ram just for the graphics, ex. aero.
1GB RAM may be enough for a NEW netbook.. everything should be good when it’s new..
but once it ages, you’ll see the difference and you might need a higher RAM.. =)
For your information, this only happens to Windows.
Linux does not become slow after used for certain time.
Only Windows will have such problems.
Maybe Ken means a few new software versions down the road? I got my Dell Mini 9 with 2GB RAM. I keep wondering why, as RAM usage never seems to go above a few hundred MB. The small screen stops me opening quite as many applications as I would on my desktop.
I was using X-Windows (and MacOS, and Windows 2.0!) 20 years ago on PCs with only 1MB RAM. If you told someone back then that you bought a PC with 2MB RAM, they would have thought you were crazy and rich!
I think 1GB for a netbook will be plenty for a very long time to come. But I think “Linux does not become slow” might come back to haunt you if your netbook is still working in ten years’ time!
10 years!?
i don’t think i will be able to use it that long.
probably already change to new netbook after 3 years.
š
and if i am continue to using it by that time,
i think i will stick to the versions that able to run on it, since it will be crazy if someone install something very new to a very old specs PC
š
Not so crazy: 13 year-old PC with latest Ubuntu 9.10 on it.
http://blog.lolyco.com/sean/2010/02/15/ubuntu-on-pentium-mmx-233mhz-very-old-pc/
It would suit a very old person, or someone who lapses into unconsciousness for several minutes after every key press or mouse click.
my old P3 450Mhz is currently serving as samba server for file storage now. anyway, it is too slow for me to even run a fluxbox on it, so i have decided to stays as a samba server
š
oh… I didn’t realise that Linux doesn’t slow down the operating speed. Is Ubuntu any good? I never heard of it.
of course it is good.
i wouldn’t use it and ditch windows away if it is not good.
There’s a special version of Ubuntu for NetBooks called Net Book Remix (NBR):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60H3FIKe-Gk
Full-blown Ubuntu works just fine on a netbook, and fantastic on a desktop (and on all 6 of my servers!).
Ubuntu has a ‘major release’ strictly every 6 months. This is the version (9.04) from 2009 April:

I might have already maxed-out on eye candy. Not sure the differences are obvious, but this is 2009 October’s 9.10:

Just in case you’re a bit o_O with the screen-capture videos (I sometimes think some of them have been post-processed), here’s a cam of 7.10 – more than two years ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olGls3XZJQw
My every day work machine is a 4-year-old cheap Dell Core2Duo laptop (the battery died two years ago, so it never leaves my desk) with the stinking ATI video adapter from hell. I don’t use quite that much eye-candy, but I do quite like flipping through all the applications on my desktops spread over two monitors at vomit-inducing speed when visitors ask me what I’m doing!
Even though the next major release (10.4) is this April, you can get free-to-download access to up-to-the-minute updates for all the software (OS and apps) installed on your PC, so you don’t have to wait for the latest features. If you’re interested to try out Ubuntu, just find someone who can lend you a USB stick with Ubuntu on it. You can’t boot Windows from a USB key, but you can start Ubuntu that way! That way you can try it out without affecting your current install.
I am using UNR 9.04 now.
I prefer 9.04 than 9.10.
But looking forward to upgrade to Lucid Lynx if it is really have all the things I want, since it is a LTS anyway.
OHHH thanks Sean! That info is very useful to me! Thanks!
i suggest u to wait until april before u start using ubuntu netbook remix.
Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx will be release at April.
that version will be much nicer and better
š
Linux rules! though i can’t use it coz I dont have my own computer. I use my work computer, which runs Windoze XP and lags all the time.
curi-curi install under wubi lor
š
As long as you enjoy it and find you netbook fine, then it is ok. š I wish I can have a netbook too because it is lighter and has more battery life. š
for me, as long as the netbook are though enough, then is good enough for me
š
Still don’t quite like a netbook. Too tiny.
no one like a netbook if using it like a normal laptop or PC.
netbook is build for portability, not for normal usage, only good for bring it around for convenience to do work only mah.
coz i always need to online at everywhere to do some of my work, therefore i need a netbook.
